Short CV:
Adjunct Professor IV of the Department of Cultural and Media Studies at UFF, Coordinator of the Centre of Violence and Communication Studies (Núcleo de Estudos da Violência e Comunicação – NevCom/UFF) and Coordinator of the Working Group Interactional Practises and Language in Communication at Compós. He holds a PhD in Communication from UFF (2007), is a FAPERJ Young Scientist from Our State Fellow (2015-2017), was the Director of the Arts and Communication Institute(IACS) at UFF (2016-2019) and is the author of the book A punição pela Audiência (The punishing Audience, Quartet/Faperj, 2002).
Advising Interests
1) Media discourse analysis, specially print media and telejournalism;
2) Communication studies in articulation with the problem of urban violence;
3) the role of information on the production of meanings in relation to the city, the favelas, and issues of subjectivity, space, and power.
4) the articulation between Communication, Philosophy, Politics, and the geographies of communication.
5) issues related to image, discourse, and meaning, specific in the dialogue between communication and contemporary punitive practises.
Research Project
The pacification of meanings: an analysis of contemporary telejournalistic discourse on urban violence.
The project analyses the discourse of the news broadcast RJTV 1ª Ed., Globo TV, through news reports on the “pacification” actions developed by the Estate in different favelas of Rio de Janeiro between 2009 and 2012. The investigation evaluates the discursive strategies which allow the TV channel to occupy an active political role as an instance for the symbolic legitimation of these social intervention processes. The researched is funded by CNPq and FAPERJ.
