AnimaMídia – Research group in Cartoons and animations

Coordination: Ariane Holzbach

AnimaMídia unites professors and graduate students interested in understanding/ contextualising/ problematising the universe of cartoons in their most varied forms of exhibition and circulation. Our aim is to study this media product in relation to adult and children’s consumption, without limiting it to an unidirectional interpretation of its communicative circuit. We are interested in worldwide cartoons, focusing on Brazilian cartoons in dialogue with foreign productions, particularly considering the complexities of the contemporary globalised scenery, where the production of areas deemed as “peripheral” dialogue and, often, are strengthened in comparison with “mainstream” cartoons.

Therefore, this perspective focuses on historical, sociocultural, and technical aspects that may further the understanding of cartoons as fundamental components of the contemporary world.

CiteLab - Laboratory of Investigation in Science, Innovation, Technology, and Education

Coordination: Thaiane Oliveira

The Laboratory of Investigation in Science, Innovation, Technology, and Education (Cite–Lab) aims at developing research focused on the understanding of communication circulation and the disputes on information about Science, Technology, and Innovation from the Global South. The Laboratory also focuses on developing strategies for scientific public policies, education, and communication. By considering Science as an strategic area for national sovereignty, and as the current centre of political and ideological disputes, this Laboratory aims at understanding how these conflicts over scientific information circulate on social media platforms, the corporate media, and society at large. Science communication is understood as vital for the discussion on Science social impact and the need for evaluative mechanisms for these modes of scientific production circulation. Since each area has a different mode of circulation for their own production, with specific their evaluation criteria of their own, and noting the consolidation of both hegemonic and alternative circuits within the global scenery of Science, Technology, and Innovation, our aim is to understand how this production is inserted within the space for Science circulation worldwide. Aware of the relevant need to advance the dialogue with society, the purpose of Cite–Lab consists of developing research, strategies, and methodologies able to broaden the social impact of Science, Technology, and Innovation, thus offering multidimensional reflections on the significance of communication and education as resources for the circulation of information within society.

Genealogies - Research Group and International Research Network

Coordination: Paula Sibilia e Marianna Ferreira Jorge

The group develops a genealogical methodology in order to investigate some historical transformations that have been affecting subjectivities, in increasingly intense contact with digital technologies of communication and information. The research covers various fields of knowledge, sharing an effort towards conceptual problematization with theoretical and philosophical support. Among the prioritized focuses, we highlight genealogical studies of body and subjective constructions; the influence of arts and media in the production of subjectivities; the historical transformations in body images, in values and beliefs, in the ways of living and suffering.

Photography, Visual, and Graphic Narratives Analysis Research Group (GRAFO/NAVI)

GRAFO/NAVI is devoted to the continuous study of discursive regimes  (and its aesthetic, semiotic, and narratological matrixes) which permeate the media culture universe of images  in several levels (the discursivities of the event  in photojournalism and the fundamentals of narrativity  in comic art. The group is associated to the concentration Communication Aesthetics and Technologies at PPGCOM/UFF, proposing theoretical and methodological frameworks for the interpretation of media products, with a special emphasis on the analysis of visual culture materials.
The repercussions of this group’s actions are specially noted on the level of both individual and collective intellectual production, as well as trough mentoring studies and research, from undergraduates and PIBIC scholarships to postdoctoral scholars, and in the articulation of several institutions involved in its  programs of continuous or contingent actions (UFF, UFRJ, UFS, UFOP, UNEB, UTP).

LabCult - Laboratory of Research in Urban Cultures and Communication Technologies

Coordinator: Simone Pereira de Sá

The group assembles researches focused on the articulation of communication technologies and contemporary social life aspects, thus cooperating toward the understanding of the computer as a communicational environment. Our work pursues two different concentrations – musicult and cybercult. Musicult favours the theme of the aesthetic experience involved in music production/ circulation/consumption when articulated to communication technologies and identitary dynamics. Generally,  the repercussions of this work is translated into contributions toward the understanding of mass music history, the modes of  hearing in modernity, and the role of technologies within this process.
By its turn,  cybercult  works on games, hypertextual narratives and analyses of the modern urban space as the environment for communication technologies, cooperate for the reflection on the history of communication technologies and cyberculture.

Laboratory of Studies on Media Intrigues (Media_Müthos)

The Laboratory of Studies on Media Intrigues (Media_Müthos) was created in em 2017, within a context of  regular meetings of different research groups from the Graduate Programs in Communication from UFF (Grafo_Navi), UFBa (Laboratory of Television Fiction Analysis, A-Tevê), and the University of Lausanne (Groupe de Recherche sur la Bande Dessinée, GReBD).  Its main interest is  examining media formats and their narrative regimes (specially those more connected with the production of meaning as “intrigue” or “plotting”), both in fictional or factual matrixes or various regimes of materiality (graphic, visual, and audiovisual). The study of these materials (that encompass an empirical extension ranging from photography to comic books and television serial fiction universes, among others) comprehends  an heuristic horizon of analysis derived from narratology (classic and post-classic) and certain poetic and audiovisual trends (specially those more connected with cognitivist paradigms of analysis).

MiDICom – Research Group in Digital Media, Identity, and Communication

Coordination: Beatriz Polivanov

The research group MiDICom aims at reflecting on dynamics  of identity construction, performance of the self, and sociotechnical interactions trough several digital media based on essentially qualitative methodological approaches. Currently, the group has two concentrations: 1) Identitary dynamics and sociotechnical interactions accross digital media , and 2) Performances within musical scenes mediated by digital culture.
The first concentration intends to investigate dynamics of identity construction and sociotechnical interactions accross different digital media environments, such as social media websites, dating apps, among others,  based upon symbolic and material perspectives, thus considering the specificities of technological mediations. By its turn, the second concentration is aimed at problematising the concept of “performance” upon different theoretical perspectives and investigate identitary performances of artists, fans, and other agents involved in contemporary musical scenes that are mediated by digital culture. In both concentrations, the goal is not only considering the communicational intentionality of the actors as expected, but also the ruptures, shifts, and “involuntary gestures” that may occur and affect ideas of expressive coherence.

Coordination: Ariane Holzbach and Mayka Castellano

Televisions unites researchers and students interested in understanding the relation between television, here considered as technology and cultural form, and the conflicts emerged from the current media context, marked by the effervescent audiovisual reconfiguration particularly generated by the popularisation  of digital culture. Among other objectives, Televisions intend to elaborate theoretical and methodological models that allow for the understanding of the cultural and social dynamics of television and new audiovisual media, by focusing on the reconfiguration of language, the communicative circuit of television products, the production of meaning, and the relationship between these products, media outlets, and the audience.
